SSYK
SSYK (Standard för svensk yrkesklassificering, the Swedish standard classification of occupations) is Statistics Sweden's system for grouping jobs. The current version is SSYK 2012, and it is used to report salaries and employment by occupation.
How the code is built
SSYK is hierarchical, from one digit up to four. The four-digit level (SSYK-4) is the most detailed, with around 430 occupational groups, and it is the level salary statistics are usually reported by. Jobs are grouped by the content of the work and its skill level, so that similar work lands in the same group regardless of what the title happens to be at a given employer.
Why it matters
To compare salaries fairly you have to compare the same occupation. SSYK is the key that ties your role to the statistics: pick the group that best matches your duties, and you can read off what the occupation actually pays and where an offer sits in the salary spread.
Where it shows up
- Evaluate a job offer
Your exact job title can differ from the SSYK name, and the same title can mean different things at different employers. Pick the occupational group that best describes what you actually do, not the one that sounds most impressive.
