Garantipension (guarantee pension)

Figures for tax year 2026Updated July 2026
Definition

Garantipension is a safety-net pension for people who earned little or no income-based pension. It tops you up to a basic minimum, so anyone who has lived in Sweden long enough has a floor to stand on in retirement.

Who gets it

It is aimed at those with low or no inkomstpension. The more income-based pension you have, the smaller your garantipension: it phases out as your own pension rises, and disappears entirely above a certain level. Full garantipension also requires 40 years of residence in Sweden; fewer years means a proportionally lower amount.

How much, and when

It is a set amount, somewhat higher for a single person (around 11 988 kr/month at the full level) than for someone married or cohabiting, and it starts at your riktålder. It is paid for life and adjusts with the price base amount, so it keeps pace with inflation.

A floor, not a plan

If garantipension is a meaningful part of your own forecast, treat it as a signal: it is a basic safety net, not a comfortable retirement. It is a strong reason to build tjänstepension and private savings while you can.
