Inkomstförsäkring (income insurance)
Inkomstförsäkring (income insurance) is a top-up on top of a-kassa for people who earn more than the a-kassa ceiling. A-kassa only replaces salary up to a certain level; income insurance fills in above that, so your total benefit approaches 80% of your actual salary. It is usually included with membership of a trade union (fackförbund).
What it covers
A-kassa only counts salary up to the ceiling of 34,000 kr a month (2026), giving at most 27,200 kr a month before tax. So if you earn more, a-kassa alone replaces a smaller share of your salary. Income insurance covers the gap above the ceiling and lifts your total compensation toward about 80% of your former salary, often up to a salary limit the policy sets.
How you get it
The most common route is through your union: most trade unions include income insurance in the membership fee. It is separate from a-kassa, so you often need both a-kassa membership and union membership for full cover. There is almost always a qualifying period before it applies, usually 12 to 18 months of membership, and it pays out for a limited number of days, often somewhere between 100 and 300. Terms differ between unions, so read your own. The payout itself is tax-free, unlike a-kassa, since the premiums are not deductible.
After the a-kassa reform
The 2025 reform raised the a-kassa ceiling, which shrinks the gap that income insurance fills. For salaries just above the ceiling it now matters less. For those earning clearly more than 34,000 kr a month it still makes a big difference. Check what your union offers and whether you need a supplementary policy for your salary level.
