SGI (sjukpenninggrundande inkomst)

Figures for tax year 2026Updated July 2026
Definition

Your SGI (sjukpenninggrundande inkomst) is the income figure Försäkringskassan uses to work out several benefits, above all sjukpenning (sick pay) and föräldrapenning (parental leave pay). Roughly speaking, those pay about 80% of your SGI, up to a ceiling.

The ceiling

SGI is capped at ten times the prisbasbelopp (PBB), which is 592 000 kr for 2026. Benefits are calculated on income up to that limit; earn above it and the extra salary does not raise your sick pay or parental pay. This is why high earners often top up sickness and parental cover through a collective agreement or their employer.

Protecting your SGI

Your SGI is based on your expected ongoing income, and it can fall if your income drops or you have gaps without work or benefits. That is why löneväxling (salary sacrifice) and long unpaid breaks need care: by lowering your registered salary, they can quietly lower the SGI your future benefits rest on.

Where it shows up

  • Parental allowance
  • Salary sacrifice
When it matters most

SGI counts exactly when you will lean on it, around having children or a long illness. If you are near one of those windows, check your SGI before making any change that lowers your registered income.
