Betalningsanmärkning (payment default)

Figures for tax year 2026Updated September 2026
Definition

A betalningsanmärkning is a note in the credit registers that you failed to pay a debt on time. It is a signal to lenders that you have been through the enforcement system, and while it is on record it makes loans, credit cards, phone contracts and rental leases much harder to get.

How you get one

A single missed invoice does not create a mark. It only happens once the Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) has ruled on the debt. The usual chain is: an unpaid invoice goes to a debt collector (inkasso), then to Kronofogden as an application for a payment order (betalningsföreläggande); if you do not contest it in time, Kronofogden issues a ruling (utslag), and that is what triggers the mark.

How long does a betalningsanmärkning stay?

For a private individual a betalningsanmärkning stays on record for three years from the day it was registered, then it is deleted (gallras) automatically. The clock runs from registration, not from payment: a mark noted on 14 February 2026 disappears on 14 February 2029, whether the debt was settled the next day or never. If you pay, it shows as settled in the meantime, which a lender may weigh, but it still counts as a mark. The three-year limit sits in the Credit Information Act (kreditupplysningslagen) and is supervised by the privacy authority IMY. Companies follow different periods, see below.

Companies: five years, and the mark arrives earlier

For a limited company (aktiebolag) or partnership the difference is twofold. The mark stays for five years instead of three. And it arrives earlier in the chain: against a legal entity, the credit bureaus register the application for a payment order itself, before Kronofogden has ruled on anything. A supplier who files an application over an invoice the company disputes therefore leaves a trace in the company's credit report immediately. The application record stays for two years after the end of the year it was filed, which in practice can be almost three years. For a private individual no application is registered, only the ruling. If you run a sole trader business (enskild firma), the firm is you as a person, so the private three-year rule applies, but a mark hits both your personal and the firm's creditworthiness because it is the same person in the register.

How to avoid one

The point of no return is the payment order, not the invoice, so act early. If you get a betalningsföreläggande for a debt you dispute, object to Kronofogden within the deadline stated in the letter. If the debt is real but you cannot pay, contact the creditor to agree a plan before it reaches a ruling. Once there is an utslag, the mark follows even if you pay the same day.

Credit cards and loans with a mark on record

Most banks and card issuers decline automatically while a mark is active, so applications during the three years often just add more credit checks to your file. Some lenders accept marks, but at interest rates that make the debt grow faster than you can repay it; the credit traps guide shows what that looks like. The practical alternative while you wait is an ordinary debit card with Visa or Mastercard, which works for online purchases, travel and hotels in the vast majority of cases with no credit check at all. Once the mark is deleted you start again from a clean file, and the credit card guide is the right place to begin.

Timeline example

You receive a payment order (betalningsföreläggande) on 15 January for a 4,200 kr debt. The letter gives you a deadline to contest, usually 10 days, so here until 25 January. You miss the deadline, so Kronofogden issues a ruling (utslag) around mid-February. The betalningsanmärkning is registered the same day. Even if you pay the 4,200 kr in full on 20 February, the mark stays until February 2029 (three years). During those three years, applying for a mortgage, a rental lease or a phone contract will be significantly harder.

Paying does not erase it

The most common misunderstanding is that settling the debt clears the mark. It does not. The anmärkning is tied to the event, not the balance, so it runs its full three years regardless. That is why responding to a payment order in time matters far more than paying quickly afterwards.
