Kollektivavtal top-up

If your workplace has a kollektivavtal (collective bargaining agreement), you may receive an extra 10 % on top of the 80% sjukpenning from day 15 to day 90. This is not included in the calculation above because the exact terms vary by agreement. Check with your employer or union.

How Sick Pay Works

How is sjukpenning calculated?

Sjukpenning is based on your SGI (sjukpenninggrundande inkomst), which for employees is normally your annual salary. The formula is: SGI × 0.97 × 80% ÷ 365 per calendar day. The SGI is capped at 10 prisbasbelopp (592 000 kr for 2026).

Employees receive sjuklön (sick pay from the employer) for days 1-14, then Försäkringskassan takes over from day 15.

What is karensavdrag?

Karensavdrag replaced the old karensdagen in 2019. It is a deduction of 20 % of your average weekly sjuklön, taken from your first payment. For a salary of 40 000 kr/month, the karensavdrag is about 1 473 kr. It only applies to employees (not self-employed or unemployed).

What happens after 364 days?

After 364 days of sick leave, the rate drops from 80% (normalnivå) to 75% (fortsättningsnivå). This applies from day 365. Försäkringskassan can extend the period if you cannot return to any work at all.

How is SGI determined?

For employees, SGI is your expected annual income from employment. It is normally set to your current gross salary × 12. For self-employed (enskild firma), SGI is based on the income reported in your latest tax return. The maximum SGI is 10 prisbasbelopp = 592 000 kr. Read more in the sjukpenning wiki article. If you are unemployed and registered with Arbetsförmedlingen, sjukpenning is capped at 543 kr per day regardless of your previous salary; the calculator applies that cap automatically.
