Net worth

Figures for tax year 2026Updated July 2026
Definition

Net worth is your total assets minus your total debts. It is the one number that sums up your whole financial position.

What counts

Assets are savings, investments (ISK, fonder), and often the value of your home. Debts are the mortgage, car loan, consumer loans and CSN. Some people include pension capital, some keep it separate because it is locked until retirement; be consistent whichever way you go.

The trend matters most

A single snapshot says little; the direction over months and years is what matters. Rising net worth means you are genuinely building wealth, even in a year when markets wobble. That is why it is the number you want to follow over time, not just at one moment.

A snapshot

Home equity is real but illiquid: you cannot spend it without selling or borrowing. Track net worth, but keep a separate eye on how much is actually accessible.

Source: general financial practice. What counts as an asset or a debt can vary, so the important thing is to measure the same way every time.
