ISK tax-free amount (fribelopp)

Figures for tax year 2026Updated September 2026
Definition

The fribelopp is the tax-free floor on an investment savings account (ISK) or an endowment insurance (KF). Up to the fribelopp you pay no flat tax (schablonskatt) at all. From 2026 the fribelopp is 300 000 kr.

How much is tax-free

The reform raises the floor in two steps. In 2025 the fribelopp was 150,000 kr; from 1 January 2026 it is 300 000 kr. That means the first 300 000 kr of your capital across ISK and KF is entirely free of the yearly flat tax. If you have less than that saved, you pay no ISK tax whatsoever.

How it is worked out

The flat tax is calculated on a capital base (kapitalunderlag), a kind of average of the account value and your deposits over the year. The fribelopp is subtracted from that base before the tax is worked out. With a standard yield of 3.55% for 2026, taxed at 30%, the effective tax comes to about 1.07% of the capital a year, but only on the part above the fribelopp. Your bank and Skatteverket handle it all automatically; you do not need to apply for anything.

Per person, across all accounts

The fribelopp applies per person and is counted across all your ISK and KF accounts together, not per account. So you cannot get several fribelopp by opening more accounts; Skatteverket adds up the base from all of them and deducts a single fribelopp. A couple with one account each, on the other hand, get one fribelopp each, twice as much tax-free between them.

What it means in kronor

Say you hold exactly 300 000 kr in your ISK all year. Without the fribelopp the flat tax would be about 1.07% of that, roughly 3,200 kr. With the fribelopp it is zero. Only once the capital grows past 300 000 kr do you start paying, and then only on the excess. The fribelopp is therefore worth most to someone who has just started saving, but it helps everyone.

Common misunderstandings

The fribelopp is not a deposit cap. You can hold as much as you like in your ISK; it is only the first 300 000 kr of the base that escapes tax. Nor is it tax-free growth: value above the fribelopp is taxed as usual by the standard method. And it applies to ISK and KF, not to a plain securities account, which is instead taxed on the actual gain.
