Occupational pension by agreement (avtalspension)
Avtalspension is the occupational pension you get through a collective agreement (kollektivavtal). The employer pays it on top of your salary, and for most employees it is the only occupational pension they have. Around nine in ten employees in Sweden are covered.
The four big agreements
Which agreement you have depends on where you work: ITP (industrins och handelns tilläggspension) for private-sector salaried employees, SAF-LO (the agreement between Svenskt Näringsliv and the LO unions) for private-sector workers, PA16 (the 2016 pension agreement) for central-government employees and AKAP-KR (avgiftsbestämd kollektiv ålderspension, kommun och region) for the municipal and regional sector. Each has its own rules for how much is paid in and which providers you can choose between, and you make your choice through the agreement’s own portal (for example Collectum for ITP or Fora for SAF-LO).
Why it matters
The avtalspension is often the part that decides how your pension turns out, especially for income above the ceiling for the public pension, where the state stops adding. If you have an employer without a collective agreement, you may not have any occupational pension at all, in which case you should ask for a solution or plan to save yourself.
