Best credit card 2026: which suits you?

Free cards, bank cards, Klarna, American Express (Amex) and reward cards compared on what costs money and what actually gives something back.

12 min readUpdated 23 August 2026

There is no credit card that is best for everyone. A free card can be sensible for everyday use, a bank card can work when it is already included, and an expensive American Express card can make sense for a frequent traveller. But a card that costs interest is rarely a win.

The short answer

Start with a card with no annual fee and set up autogiro for the full statement. Only pay for a premium card when you already know exactly which benefits you will use. Do not count rewards before you have counted the fee, foreign exchange markup and interest.

First: when should you not have a credit card?

If you cannot reliably pay the full balance every month, a debit card is the better choice. A credit card reward worth a few hundred kronor immediately loses to interest and fees. First read how credit cards work and how credit traps work. The one setting that makes this comparison meaningful is autogiro for the full statement.

One rule before every recommendation

Instalments are borrowing, not a benefit. If you want to spread a purchase, compare the effective interest rate and every setup and invoice charge before agreeing to anything.

You are not always comparing the same product

Credit card pages often mix fundamentally different products. That creates bad lists. Here is the distinction you need before ranking cards.

Ordinary credit card

Purchases collect on one statement. Pay the full amount on time and purchase credit remains interest-free.

Bank or package card

The card may look free but be inside a paid everyday package. Count the whole package if you are getting it for the card.

Card with payment choices

Klarna and similar products mix card payment, balance and the option to pay later. That is not the same as a fixed card credit.

American Express, usually called Amex, is a card issuer and payment network separate from Visa and Mastercard. That can make its acceptance less predictable, so keep a Visa or Mastercard as a backup if Amex becomes your main card. Debit cards such as Northmill should not be ranked as credit cards at all, even if they are useful for travel and foreign currency.

The table is a map, not buying advice. It shows which cards belong in the same conversation. Fees and terms were checked against published issuer information on 23 August 2026.

Which card should you start with?

My recommendation is deliberately cautious. A good first card has no annual fee, a clear statement and a Visa or Mastercard network. Then choose specialist cards when they solve a real need.

For most people

Start free

Bank Norwegian and re:member flex are the two clear no-fee starting points. Choose Norwegian for a simple card with travel insurance and points or cashback. Choose re:member only if you will actually use its online discounts.

For the bank customer

Do not buy a package for the card

If you already use LF, SEB, Nordea, Swedbank, Handelsbanken or Danske Bank, their card can be reasonable. If you get an everyday package only for the credit card, compare its full cost with a free alternative.

For rewards and travel

Amex after the calculation

Amex Green is the sensible way to try the system. Gold and Platinum are not upgrades that automatically add value. Total the lounge visits, travel cover and other benefits you already know you will use before paying the fee.

For the Klarna user

Keep card and credit separate

Klarna's paid membership can suit you if its cashback, purchase protection or included services replace things you already pay for. Treat the choice to pay later or split a purchase as a new credit decision every time, not as a card benefit.

Amex or Klarna?

They are often compared because both are marketed as modern cards, but they suit different behaviour. The important part is not which logo looks more premium. It is how you pay and what you get back.

American Express

Choose American Express, commonly called Amex, for rewards, travel benefits and a normal card statement you always pay in full. Green is free. Gold and Platinum require you to show how the high annual fee comes back in benefits. Carry a Visa or Mastercard backup.

Klarna

Klarna is now a membership ladder, not simply a free card. Everywhere, Plus, Premium and Max offer different levels of cashback, protection, travel and subscriptions. Choose it only when the benefits you already use exceed the monthly fee.

Amex has three clear price levels: Green at SEK 0, Gold at SEK 2,100 a year and Platinum at SEK 9,000 a year. Gold brings four lounge visits and a dining benefit. Platinum moves to broader lounge access, Fast Track and more travel-oriented benefits. Compare Amex's own cards and benefits before trying to justify a fee.

Klarna or Amex: start with the real fee

Klarna EverywhereSEK 49/monthVisa card, payment choices and 0% foreign-exchange feeThe first month is free. Afterwards this tier has no cashback.

Klarna PremiumSEK 199/month1% cashback, travel cover and subscriptionsCompare the 12 subscriptions with what you would genuinely pay for.
Klarna MaxSEK 549/month1.5% cashback and unlimited loungesCompare with Amex Platinum first. The lounges, protection and travel benefits need frequent use.

My boundary: if you want an uncomplicated everyday card, choose a simple free Mastercard or Visa credit card. If you want to optimise rewards or travel, build from there with Amex. If you want to pay later, read the cost of that specific purchase before you agree.

Points, cashback and paid cards

Points do not have a fixed cash value. A voucher you never redeem, a lounge you never visit or store points for a shop you would not otherwise choose are not savings. Calculate the annual fee first. Then calculate what you would genuinely have paid for the same benefit without the card.

Cards we do not rank as new recommendations

A serious comparison needs to remove products when their core idea changes. Morrow Bank stopped giving new reward points on 1 May 2026, although older comparisons still call it a cashback card. FOREX Credit Card has 0% FX markup but is currently pausing new applications. They may matter to existing holders, but not as a new default choice.

Your bank and credit card are two decisions

You do not need to have your credit card with your main bank. Choose a main bank for salary, bills, BankID and a debit card. Choose a credit card for cost, travel cover and how you actually shop. Our bank comparison covers the first choice. Having both with the same company is only rational when it delivers a real package benefit, not just fewer logins.

Your credit limit can affect your mortgage

When preparing for a mortgage promise, Swedish banks do not only look at the debt you have today. In their KALP affordability calculation (kvar att leva på, what you have left to live on), they can include the granted credit and interest rate for credit cards and overdrafts. SEB explicitly asks for that information in its mortgage calculator. An unused SEK 100,000 limit can therefore reduce the space you receive in that bank's calculation, even with a SEK 0 statement balance.

Before buying a home: review old cards, instalment accounts and credit limits well in advance. Reduce or close what you do not need, but do not do it immediately before applying without talking to the bank. There is no national rule that turns one credit limit into one lower mortgage amount, because every lender performs its own credit assessment.

Before you apply

  1. Apply for one card, not five, and read the standardised credit information.
  2. Choose e-invoice and autogiro for the full balance on the same day the card is activated.
  3. Check foreign exchange and cash withdrawal fees before travelling. Avoid cash withdrawals with a credit card unless you have first read the terms.
  4. Read exactly how much of a trip must be paid with the card for travel insurance to apply.
  5. Calculate the annual fee before the reward and value points based on what you will actually use them for.
  6. If you will soon apply for a mortgage, review granted credit limits before applying for more cards.

Common questions

What is the best free credit card?

For most people it is the card you can pay in full every month, with a SEK 0 annual fee and a working app. Bank Norwegian is a broad starting point. re:member flex is stronger when its specific online discounts are genuinely used.

Is Amex Gold or Platinum worth the fee?

Only when you regularly use the named benefits. Gold and Platinum are different products, not different colours of the same everyday card.

Is Klarna enough as a credit card?

Klarna can work for someone who will use one of its membership benefits and wants Visa acceptance with app controlled payment choices. It does not replace payment discipline. Do not choose it to normalise instalments.

Do I need my credit card with my bank?

No. A separate card can be cheaper or provide better benefits. Just compare the bank card with the actual cost of an alternative, not with zero.
